I thought I found a good deodarant, and it started out good, but then it just stops working. Why?

Basically if you use a deodorant for a long time, your body will get used to it, and will just absorb the deodorant. That's why you have to switch your deodorants once a month.

I use Lavilin. It is not an anti-persperant, but takes care of any smells completely (it doesn't have a smell that I can detect). It will last a day or more.

I wouldn't say you would need to switch it once a month, but sometimes your body does get used to certain products, or your body chemistry shifts. I switch between Dove, Secret, and Degree. So far, Degree (the little black dress kind with tealish packaging) works most often for me.
