How to fix a broken purse strap?

Asked by [ Editor ]

What can I do to fix my broken purse strap? Safety-pin will not do :) The purse is made out of leather.

You can sew it, but it will not be easy. I recommend a strong needle, such as a tapestry needle, and embroidery thread for real security. Make sure you match the color of the thread to the bag as best as possible.
Please don't be ridiculous like me: use a thimble. pushing a large needle through several layers of leather takes some strength.

I am not sure how it is separated or what the purse looks like (if it was on a ring, directly on the bag, etc.), but keep in mind, the smaller the stitches, the less visible.
Sew the strap to the purse from both sides, as this will help distribute the stress on the new stitches and the strap better and less likely to tear.
If you can, make a good knot and start from the inside of the purse. Be sure to go through all layers! Sometimes, Sewing at an angle can help with that.

Those are the directions for if it detached directly from the bag. If it was on a ring or came off entirely from the side of the purse intact, it will be easier. Remember: when you can, always start on the inside of the purse, and very, very securely knot it when you are done on the inside, as well.

I will have to get a tapestry needle tomorrow and try this. Will let you know how it went. This purse was given to me by someone special, thats why I want to fix it. Thanks again!

Best of luck! My purses wear out and then the straps often relatively regularly because I carry too much stuff, so I’ve gone through this process an number of times with a number of purses.

One of my favorite bag's strap came apart right where it attatches to the body. I plan on taking it to my local cleaners that does repairs. It probably will cost 10-15 dollars and be a professional job.
